El 25 de enero del 1979 en las primeras horas de la tarde, pisó tierra dominicana su Santidad Juan Pablo II, Sumo Pontífice de la Iglesia Católica. En Nombre del pueblo le dio la bienvenida el Presidente de todos los dominicanos, Don Antonio Guzmán, quien dijo: Santo Padre: bienvenido a esta tierra que nació la civilización occidental a la luz del evangelio, predicado por pastores que levantaron, luego, su voz airada para dar al hombre que hallaron aquí, el lugar que corresponde a toda criatura humana, como nos enseñó el Salvador del Mundo. Y dijo el Santo Padre: doy gracias a Dios, que me permite llegar a este pedazo de tierra americana, tierra amada por Colón, en la primera etapa de mi visita a un continente al que tantas veces ha volado mi pensamiento, lleno de estima y confianza, sobre todo en este periodo inicial de mi ministerio de Supremo Pastor de la Iglesia. |
